A Room of One's Own

I recently once again had the pleasure of photographing the award-winning author Alice Nelson after ten years. Alice Nelson's beautiful writer's room was designed by Hartree Architects. As Virginia Woolf once said "A woman needs a room of one's own in order to write." - Alice Nelson: "I've had plenty of rooms of my own, and plenty of desks, but never one as beautifuil as my light-filled desk-in-a-window. It's the perfect space to write, to read, to dream." Some of her works include the books "The Last Sky" published by Fremantle Press and "After This - Survivors of the Holocaust speak". Her first novel, The Last Sky, was shortlisted for the Australian / Vogel's Literary Award (2004), won the T.A.G. Hungerford Award (2006) and was shortlisted for the Australian Society of Authors' Barbara Jefferis Award (2009). She was also named Best Young Australian Novelist of 2009 in the Sydney Morning Herald's national awards program. Alice Nelson has two more books being published in the near future!

Going with the Grain - Black and White Family Portraits in Winter

Winter. My absolute favourite time of year for painterly black and white portraits (of baby, child, teenager or the whole family). I work with traditional darkroom black and white film, that has a kind of magic which does not require much work other than seeing the beautiful mood, texture and tones unfold right through the lens.

Spiritual or not, I love this quote... "Works of Love are Works of Peace." - Mother Theresa

Stay Safe - WA Firefighters

Good morning Perth and country WA, thinking of family and friends this week fighting fires in the extreme heat and would like to send my thoughts out to all our hard working fire fighters (and their supporting families) dealing with the extreme conditions. Stay safe, Nicole xx

Small Wonders

When photographing people, young or old, there is an emotional inspiration that words cannot describe. There is so much natural peace and beauty in all of us. Looking through the lens slows down time, it is peaceful and meditative, painting a portrait with light requires patience and timing is everything. Like all the good things in life, it's not quantity, it's quality.
